“Do something every day that scares you.”
At long last, presenting February 30th – my idea for an animated series.
On the surface, it’s a concept for an animated comedy series about holiday characters and who they are in real life. This is a short video – not even a full pilot episode – so it’s really just there to introduce the characters. I ended up cutting several minutes of action to keep it reasonably short… hopefully you can imagine all of the humorous places this can go inside a 20-minute series.
Personally, this is the latest evolution of my artistic pursuits that began over 25 years ago, originally with cartoon art. There’s a little bit of everything from my past in here… Fitzpatrick the Rat, Harvel (which I haven’t posted yet), and of course the original Feb. 30th comic strips (which I hate). Over the last 2-3 years, I’ve had a blast adding animation to the skill set … although mastery is a journey, not a destination (as those of you who have followed me from the beginning are painfully aware!).
Professionally, this is a stake in the ground relative to how I want to spend my time. I continue to enjoy a long and rewarding career as a marketing leader at some fabulous companies, working alongside some amazing people. But if someone told me I’d still be doing the same thing in another 10 years, although I’d appreciate the continued employment, I think I’d let out a little whimper. Change is necessary and good, and I want to affect that balance. Which brings me to…
…Purposefully. A good friend and leader once taught me about the 3 questions you need to ask: (1) what are you good at, (2) what brings you meaning, and (3) what can sustain you.
I’ll let others answer number 1. For number 2 (ha ha), making people laugh through art is the most rewarding thing I’ve experienced. My awesome family aside, nothing else comes close. And number 3? Well, we’re just getting started, but anything can happen.
So I hope you enjoy this. It’s about 9 minutes… an eternity for social media I know. I’ve bleeped out some of the edgier lines, but left enough in to make it probably NSFW. If you like it, share it. If you don’t, that’s ok too.
